Virtual Mindfulness-Based Interventions for Chronic Pain: Veterans Clinical Trial

One of the things I am trying to do is ensure that everyone with chronic pain is aware of the research being done on chronic pain in clinical trials.

Attached is the JAMA article on one clinical trial. Although this clinical trial had veterans as participants, I thought the results could potentially apply to anyone.

Here is the summary from the clinical trial article:

Key Points

Question

How effective are scalable, relatively low-resource mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) delivered via telehealth for veterans with chronic pain?

Findings

In this multisite randomized clinical trial, both group and self-paced MBIs improved pain-related function and biopsychosocial outcomes among veterans with chronic pain and high levels of psychiatric comorbidity. The likelihood of 30% improvement from baseline was greater for group MBI at 10weeks and 6months and for self-paced MBI at 10weeks, 6months, and 1year.

Meaning

These scalable, relatively low-resource MBIs conducted virtually could help accelerate the implementation of nonpharmacological pain treatment in health care systems.
