Why I Am a Member of the World Patients Alliance and My Goals for the Next Two Years

As a passionate advocate for chronic pain and patient engagement, joining the World Patients Alliance (WPA) was a natural step in my journey. The WPA unites patient organizations and advocates from around the globe, creating a powerful collective voice to influence healthcare systems, policies, and practices. For someone who has lived with chronic pain for over 37 years and dedicated much of their life to advocacy, the opportunity to collaborate on a global scale is both an honor and a responsibility.

The WPA represents all patients, not just those living with chronic pain. Its efforts focus on empowering patients and improving healthcare systems worldwide. I am proud to serve as the representative of the American Chronic Pain Association (ACPA) within the WPA and as a newly appointed Advisory Board member for the WPA, a role I will serve in for the next two years. In this capacity, I am a strong voice advocating for patient engagement, particularly in clinical trials, ensuring that patients are involved in shaping the future of healthcare.

Membership in the WPA is reserved for organizations that align with its mission and priorities, ensuring a cohesive and dedicated effort toward patient-centered healthcare. I firmly believe that we are stronger together, and I encourage persons with lived experience (PWLE) to advocate for their organizations to join the WPA. By uniting under the WPA’s banner, we can amplify our collective voice and create transformative change in global healthcare systems.

My Motivation to Join the WPA

Living with chronic pain has shaped every aspect of my life. Becoming an advocate was not a choice but a calling—my life was so deeply affected by chronic pain that I recognized the urgent need to help patients have a voice in their own healthcare. Through my work as a facilitator for chronic pain support groups and a patient advisor on clinical trials, I have witnessed firsthand the transformative impact of patient engagement in healthcare. The WPA’s mission aligns closely with my own: to ensure patients are at the center of healthcare decision-making. Being a member of this organization allows me to:

  1. Amplify the Voice of Chronic Pain Patients: Too often, chronic pain is misunderstood, underfunded, and stigmatized. By contributing to the WPA’s initiatives, I aim to bring greater attention to the unique challenges faced by chronic pain patients.
  2. Champion Patient-Centered Research: As a patient advisor, I have seen the value of including patients’ lived experiences in shaping clinical trials. The WPA’s emphasis on patient engagement offers a platform to advocate for more inclusive and meaningful research practices.
  3. Build Global Connections: Chronic pain knows no borders. Through the WPA, I can collaborate with advocates, researchers, and policymakers worldwide to share best practices and develop innovative solutions.

Goals for My Two-Year Term

Over the next two years, I plan to focus on the following objectives:

  1. Strengthening Patient Advocacy:
    • Develop resources and training programs to empower patients and advocates to effectively participate in healthcare decision-making.
    • Collaborate with member organizations to address stigma and improve public understanding of chronic pain.
  2. Enhancing Patient Engagement in Research:
    • Promote the integration of patient advisors in clinical trials and ensure that their voices are heard at every stage—from design to dissemination.
    • Advocate for the adoption of guidelines that prioritize transparency, accessibility, and relevance in patient-centered research.
  3. Fostering International Collaboration:
    • Work with global partners to identify and address systemic barriers to equitable healthcare access.
    • Support initiatives that highlight the importance of culturally sensitive care and inclusivity in chronic pain management.
  4. Elevating Awareness of Chronic Pain:
    • Organize campaigns and events to educate the public, healthcare providers, and policymakers about the realities of living with chronic pain.
    • Advocate for increased funding for chronic pain research and the development of comprehensive treatment strategies.

A Shared Vision for the Future

The World Patients Alliance is more than an organization; it is a movement. Together, we can create a world where patients’ voices are not only heard but also acted upon. I am deeply committed to contributing my experience, skills, and perspective to this collective effort. Over the next two years, I will strive to make meaningful progress toward a healthcare system that respects, supports, and empowers patients worldwide.

I urge every patient advocate and person with lived experience to recognize the power of collective action. By encouraging your organizations to join the WPA, you strengthen our ability to advocate for change and influence healthcare systems on a global scale. United, we can achieve far more than we could as individuals or isolated groups. Let’s seize this opportunity to work together and make a real difference.
