Recently, I was honored to be elected to the Advisory Board of the World Patients Alliance (WPA) as a representative of the Pan American Health Organization Area (PAHO). Countries represented by members of the WPA include Brazil, Canada, Columbia, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, and the United States.
Here is a short statement on the The World Patients Alliance (WPA) is a global nonprofit organization that serves as an umbrella for patients and patient organizations worldwide. Its mission is to be the global voice of patients, working toward patient empowerment and engagement, improved access to safe, innovative treatments, and patient-centered healthcare globally. The WPA envisions a world where all patients have access to safe, high-quality, and affordable healthcare.
To achieve this vision, the WPA focuses on several core goals:
- Patient Empowerment and Engagement: Ensuring patients actively participate in all stages of healthcare, including planning, provision, monitoring, research, and evaluation of health services (World Patients Alliance, n.d.-a).
- Access to Safe and Innovative Treatments: Advocating for timely, effective, and affordable treatments for various health conditions (World Patients Alliance, n.d.-b).
- Patient-Centered Healthcare: Promoting a partnership between patients and healthcare providers to address individual health needs and desired outcomes, encompassing physical, emotional, psychosocial, and economic aspects (World Patients Alliance, n.d.-b).
- Collaboration and Partnership: Working with stakeholders to ensure patients have a voice in decision-making processes concerning their healthcare (World Patients Alliance, n.d.-c).
Through these efforts, the WPA aims to empower patients and advocate for healthcare systems that prioritize patient needs and rights worldwide.
