OPINION – The Reality of Bladder Cancer and the Power of Virtual Reality

This morning, I faced the not-so-thrilling experience of checking the progress of my bladder cancer. On my personal list of “Most Unfavorite Things,” having a cystoscope is right up there with a colonoscopy.

For those unfamiliar, Google sums it up as: “A cystoscopy is a procedure that allows a doctor to examine the inside of the bladder and urethra using a thin, lighted tube with a lens or camera.”

Sounds harmless enough, right? But let me assure you, even with a flexible cystoscope, the experience is anything but pleasant.
Not only do you get to strip down and endure the preparation process, but then there’s the joy of having the cystoscope inserted—yes, up your penis!

Years ago, I had the “pleasure” of being examined with an old-school, solid cystoscope by a military doctor who cranked it around to view every angle of my bladder. The pain was indescribable.

Thankfully, technology has come a long way since then—both in medical equipment and pain management techniques. For over 37 years, I’ve lived with chronic back, hip, groin, and abdominal pain. Virtual Reality (VR) has been a game-changer for me, helping me breathe through pain and redirect my focus.

After my first cystoscopy, I had an idea: could VR help me manage the discomfort of these exams?

The first time I brought my VR headset into the procedure room, the doctor, nurses, and technicians were fascinated. While they worked “down there,” I was fully immersed in a program called TRIPP, watching clouds drift across vibrant skies.

The breakthrough moment? When the nurse was shocked that I didn’t flinch—not once—as the doctor burned out a tumor in my bladder. VR allowed me to remain completely still, my mind absorbed in something far from the pain.

Since then, I’ve used my VR headset during every cystoscope. It doesn’t eliminate the discomfort, but it gives me the ability to divert my focus, making the experience much more manageable.

VR has helped me reclaim some control over the pain and anxiety that often come with these procedures.

It might help you too! If you’re living with chronic pain or facing tough medical exams, VR could be a powerful tool to explore. 🌈✨

Let me know if you’ve tried it—or if you’d like to learn more. Together, we can explore ways to make these challenging experiences just a little more bearable. 💪
