Held Through the Pain: What My Faith Has Meant in My Journey with Chronic Pain

I think I’ve always been strengthened by my faith. It hasn’t just been a belief system—it’s been a steady presence in my life, an anchor in the storms of chronic illness, cancer, and loss. My journey with pain has been long and difficult, but never without meaning. And never without the sense that I was being held.

My Grandmother laid the foundation for that faith. Whenever I visited her on the farm, church was a given. She gave me my very first Bible. Every night before bed, we would read Bible stories together. And during our long walks through the fields and around the farm, life lessons were always wrapped in scripture. It was never forced—it was loving and real. She lived her faith, and I followed in her quiet footsteps.

At home, things weren’t always easy. The environment wasn’t nurturing, and I often had to find solitude in the woods or out walking the land. But I never felt alone. The dogs and I walked together, and I knew—we were with the Lord. Those walks became sacred. They gave me peace and strength that I carried with me into adulthood.

I had many illnesses as a child. Still, I never felt abandoned. Faith was not just a comfort—it was a deep well of strength I could draw from. And even after my parents passed, even when I could no longer walk the farm, I felt the presence of that same peace. Weaker, yes—but never alone.

When I was diagnosed with cancer and told I would die, I turned to prayer again. That same deep-rooted faith helped me find strength I didn’t know I had. It helped me stay present in the face of the unknown. It helped me keep going. And when I look back, I truly believe the Lord blessed me with Marianne, my partner, whose own faith has only strengthened mine. I see her love and support as a divine gift.

Chronic pain can be a lonely path. It wears you down. It tests everything. But my faith reminds me that even in suffering, there is purpose. That I am not walking this path alone. That I am loved—still and always.

Through faith, I’ve found:

Pain doesn’t define me. Faith does. It holds me, guides me, and reminds me that I am never, ever alone.
